Some of our providers specifically practice functional and integrative medicine. Sarah Rodewald, CNP is currently going through the Institute of Functional Medicine Certificate Program. She works closely with our clinical pharmacist Melody Hartzler, PharmD, BCACP, BC-ADM to treat patients with a functional and integrative health approach. Dr. Hartzler also blogs about functional medicine topics at www.PharmToTable.Life. Physical manipulation is also another way to help the body on the path to healing and Dr. Shelli Ridge, DO is an osteopathic physician on our team that can work with our patients in that manner. You can read more about each of these providers here.
We also work closely with Katie Poppe, RD of Clem and Thyme, LLC on elimination diets and individualized dietary approaches to manage and treat various conditions. Katie is available for appointments in our office on Tuesday afternoons. You can see her at other locations throughout the week.
The main emphasis with functional medicine is getting to the root cause of disease. For example, if you suffer with Irritable Bowel symptoms we are going to look at the bacteria balance in your gut as well as look for inflammation caused by a variety of internal and external factors. If you have headaches we are going to also look at gut health, inflammation, food allergies/intolerances, nutritional deficiencies, and make sure your body is aligned. We specialize in healing the gut, reducing the burden of autoimmune conditions, and addressing nutritional deficiencies that often are at the root cause of chronic disease.
Due to the nature of functional medicine, it requires not only extra time on our part, but also on the part of the patient. We expect patients to be active in their journey back to health. A lengthy intake survey is required to be completed prior to your first functional medicine consult. Likely your path to treatment will include functional laboratory testing, supplements, and lifestyle changes. We also require our patients attend at least 1 group medical visit, but they are welcome to attend more as needed. Once you are scheduled for your initial consult, the survey will be emailed to you. We look forward to coming alongside you on your journey.
